Spotify's Fresh Finds Forward: What Indian Independent Artists Actually Get, and How to Get Considered

Getting a song onto Fresh Finds India has always felt like a small win that's hard to explain to family. It's not a big playlist, it doesn't promise money, and a lot of people outside indie circles have never heard of it. Since September, though, that placement comes with something extra: an invitation to Spotify's new Fresh Finds Forward program.

Spotify announced Fresh Finds Forward on 17 September 2026 and brought it up again in its Q3 2026 results on 22 October. The company says it will support about 10,000 emerging independent artists every year. We've been reading the fine print, because a lot of artists who distribute with us release independently in Hindi, Punjabi, Haryanvi and Bhojpuri, and that's exactly who this is meant for. Some of it is useful for Indian artists. Some of it, honestly, is only for people in the US right now.

What Fresh Finds Forward actually is

It's a 12-month membership for independent artists who have been picked for a Fresh Finds playlist. There's no application form. According to Spotify's help page for the program, you get in like this:

1. An editor adds your song to any global Fresh Finds playlist. That includes Fresh Finds India. 2. If the placement happened on or after 1 January 2026, and you meet Spotify's other eligibility rules, the admin users on your Spotify for Artists team get an invitation. 3. Joining is optional. Once you accept and finish signing up, your 12 months start.

Spotify hasn't published the full list of "other eligibility criteria". So being on the playlist makes you a likely candidate, not a guaranteed member. One practical thing follows from this. The invite goes to admins on your Spotify for Artists account. If your manager or cousin set up the profile and you're not an admin, ask them to add you, or you may never see it.

What members get

Spotify lists these benefits:

  • Early access to some Spotify tools and features before everyone else
  • A Fresh Finds badge on your artist profile, showing you were picked by Spotify's editors
  • A private community channel, a benefits hub, and online and in-person sessions with Spotify staff, industry people and earlier Fresh Finds artists
  • Partner offers, including LANDR Studio Pro and Splice's Creator Plan
  • Mental health support, including six months of free therapy through BetterHelp
  • Free studio time at places like Electric Lady Studios in New York and Spotify Studios in Los Angeles
  • A chance to apply for tour or music video partnerships with Spotify

Now the catch. The free studio time is only for US-based artists. The tour and video partnerships are also described as "coming soon for a limited number of artists based in the U.S." The in-person summit is in Los Angeles, with "more planned globally" and no dates given for India. Partner services like BetterHelp have their own terms and local availability too.

So for an artist in Alwar, Patna or Ludhiana, the useful parts today are the badge, the early tool access, the online community and sessions, and the music software deals. That's still worth having. It's just not a studio session in New York.

Fresh Finds India: what it is and how it behaves

Fresh Finds India describes itself as "the best new music by independent artists and labels in India". It came to India in 2021, and it's usually the first editorial playlist an independent artist gets on. Spotify's own artist programs page says Fresh Finds has featured more than 80,000 artists from over 100 countries over the years.

The music site Discography has been tracking the India playlist closely, and two things from their October snapshots are worth knowing.

First, it really is independent. When they checked the ℗ lines on the playlist on 15 October 2026, 35 of its 50 songs were credited to the artist or another individual, not a company.

Second, "new" doesn't always mean "released last week". In their look at how fresh Fresh Finds India is, one song had come out on 5 February and was only added months later. Another was added about 140 days after release. The playlist also didn't change much day to day. Across 38 checks in three days, it changed once, when five new songs came in at the top.

What this tells you: an editor can pick up your song well after release day. A release that fades after the first week has less chance of that than one you keep pushing.

How to give your song a real shot

You can't apply for Fresh Finds Forward, but you can control how your song reaches the editors. This is the part that actually matters.

Pitch before release, not after. Spotify editors only consider unreleased songs pitched through Spotify for Artists, at least seven days before release day, and you can pitch one song at a time. In practice that means your distributor needs to deliver the song well before that, so it shows up under "Upcoming" in your dashboard. Our release timeline guide walks through the dates.

Fill the pitch properly. Genre, mood, language, instruments and culture tags are how your song gets routed to the right editor. A Haryanvi pop song tagged only as "Pop" might land with someone who has no reason to care about it. Say what the song is in plain words: where it's from, who it's for, anything happening around it, like a Reel trend, a live show or a festival release. Our pitching guide has examples.

Get the metadata clean. Wrong artist names, a featured singer left out, or the wrong language makes your song look careless to an editor and can put it on the wrong artist profile. The metadata checklist covers what to check before you upload.

Claim your Spotify for Artists profile, and check who's an admin. No profile access means no pitching and no Forward invite. If you haven't claimed yours yet, start with our Spotify for Artists guide.

Never buy streams or playlist spots. Spotify's editorial playlists don't take payment, and anyone selling "guaranteed Fresh Finds placement" is selling something else. Fake streams can get songs taken down. We explained the risks in our takedowns guide.

Who should care most

If you make indie pop, singer-songwriter, hip-hop or rock, Fresh Finds India is a realistic first target, and this program makes the placement more valuable than before.

If you're a Bhojpuri, Rajasthani or devotional artist, Fresh Finds may not be the natural home for your songs. The same pitching habits still help with Spotify's regional and genre playlists, and the badge-and-tools idea may spread to other programs later. Spotify's Loud & Clear India report from September shows Haryanvi streams went up nearly seven times between February 2023 and February 2026, so regional music clearly has the editors' attention.
